“Is my hair thinning?” This is the latest question I’ve added to my internal monologue over quarantine. Others include, “Is that a wrinkle?” and “Is all this screen time damaging my skin?” With all of these, I’m not sure if I’m actually experiencing these issues or if I just have way more time to spend in front of a mirror than I did pre-pandemic.

Either way, that recent hair Q was stressing me out (which doesn’t help hair loss, btw), because while botox can help wrinkles, and serums and makeup can make some skin magic, hair loss or hair thinning doesn’t have as quick of a solve..or does it? Just as I was about to start looking into seeing a trichologist for a full-on scalp analysis (perks of being a beauty editor), I was pitched the BeautyBio GloPro Scalp Microneedling Tool. While the brand has microneedling devices for your face, body, and even lips, this is their first foray into hair.

Dermatologists approve of dermarolling to support hair loss.

"Microneedling is a great tool that can help stimulate growth factors, new blood vessel formation, and stems cells located in the hair bulge," says Cheri Frey, MD, a dermatologist in Maryland. The idea is that microneedling the scalp stimulates blood flow to “wake up” hair follicles and encourage them to grow as well as creating micro channels in the skin that allow hair growth serum to penetrate deeper.

"Many dermatologists, including myself, recommended microneedling devices to be used in conjunction with prescription serums and over the counter products like Rogaine," says Dr. Frey.

You have to dermaroll daily and pair it with a serum for the best results.

BeautyBio's system includes a dermaroller head with 0.3mm needles (no, they don't hurt or draw blood) that has a cushion flex to it, like a razor, so it bends with your scalp, along with a "healthy scalp serum." The serum is a blend of soothing, strengthening, and hydrating ingredients for both the scalp and hair itself and includes loquat leaf, camellia leaf, zinc, and rosebay extract to name a few. That said, if you already have a scalp serum you love or one that your hairstylist or doctor has prescribed, you can also pair that with the microneedling tool.

You can use the system AM and PM for even speedier results, but I knew doing it once in the evening was more realistic for me to be able to stick to it. So, every night I would roll the microneedling device along where I felt like my hair was thinning—the front of my part as well as on my temples—then follow with a few drops of the serum. While the serum didn’t leave my strands greasy, it does take a bit of time to dry which is why I preferred to apply it at night.

Dermarolling takes about six months to see full results but you could see results sooner.

I was skeptical at first to check in on my progress because as I write this, it’s only been four weeks since the day I started the two-step system. But, it's working! I just compared before and after pictures (see above) and my hair is definitely fuller on my temples and the tiny baby hairs along my hairline are growing.

The brand's founder, Jamie O'Banion, says you won't know the full extent of your results until after about six months but that their clinical studies showed results in as little as 30 days as well. "Each hair on our head is at a unique point in the hair growth cycle. Some hairs are just starting to bloom in the anagen phase while others are on their way out in the catagen or telogen phase," explains Jamie.

You have to continue using a dermaroller to keep up with the results.

Yes, you must keep using the tool and serum to continue reaping the hair growth benefits. However, Jamie does say that once you reach the point where you're satisfied, you can scale back using it to just two to three times a week.
