Island Kahunas (Trials of Sarah) (2024)

An island kahuna (Japanese: しまキング Island King or しまクイーン Island Queen) is a person who presides over a certain island challenge in the Alola region. Island kahunas serve as the final obstacle in that particular island's trial and battle a Trainer in a grand trial. There is one kahuna for each of the four main islands of Alola, with each one chosen by that island's guardian deity. In addition to presiding over an island, they are also in charge of tending to their guardian's ruins when necessary and selecting new Trial Captains for their island. Prior to the establishment of the Alolan Pokémon League, a Trainer attempting their island challenge who had finished all of their trials and grand trials was to scale Mount Lanakila and battle all four kahunas in a row in order to become an island challenge champion.

According to Acerola, a person chosen to be an island kahuna cannot refuse the position; in this case, she was referring to Nanu. A kahuna's reign lasts until they die, as was the case with Hapu's grandfather and predecessor, or are forcibly ejected from their position by their respective guardian deity, as was with the case with a former unspecified kahuna who established the gang that Team Skull drew inspiration from. The time in between an island kahuna's exit from their position and the naming of a new one is not always immediate — following the death of Hapu's grandfather, Poni Island was left without a kahuna for several years.

It is unknown how the lack of a kahuna affects the island challenge, specifically the assignment of Trial Captains and the final trial. In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Poni Island's sole Trial Captain, Mina, says that a kahuna from one of the other islands has to substitute for an island without one in order to allow that island's grand trials to be conducted — a role Nanu had to play prior to Hapu's crowning. However, Mina does not mention who selected her to be a Trial Captain.

Hala (Japanese: ハラ Hala) is Hau's grandfather. He is also the Kahuna of Melemele Island and a member of the Alola Elite Four. He specializes in Fighting-type Pokémon.

History[]

As revealed in League Offenders and Defenders!, Hala was once Professor Kukui and Guzma's mentor. He attempted to keep the peace between the pair, but Guzma became disillusioned with Hala's teachings and decided to become strong on his own without using a Z-Ring or Z-Crystals.

Hala debuted in To Top a Totem!, where he was revealed to be the one who made the Z-Ring that Tapu Koko gave to Ash in Alola to New Adventure!. He tasked Ash with finding a nonviolent way to drive out a group of wild Alolan Rattata and Raticate. After Ash gave him the answer, he led Ash to Verdant Cavern, a trial site inhabited by a Totem Gumshoos, so that Ash could start his island challenge. Following Ash's victory, he became qualified to take on Hala's grand trial.

In Trial and Tribulation!, Hala was Ash's opponent in his Melemele grand trial. After a tough battle, Ash emerged victorious. Hala was about to give Ash a Fightinium Z as a reward, but suddenly, Tapu Koko swooped in and swapped it with an Electrium Z, which Hala gave to Ash instead.

In Family Determination!, Hala informed Ash and his classmates of the legend of Solgaleo and the Altar of the Sunne. In The Professors' New Adventure!, he attended the wedding of Professor Kukui and Professor Burnet.

In Getting a Jump on the Competition!, Hala visited Mount Lanakila, where he and his Crabrawler battled a Sneasel and won, allowing Crabrawler to evolve into Crabominable. Later, along with Crabominable, he entered the Pokémon Sled Jump Games and won.

He reappeared in the Poké Problem segment of SM079, where he was watching a Minior shower with Hariyama.

In Full Moon and Many Arms!, Hala and Hariyama watched the battle between Lunala and Necrozma. Because of Necrozma's presence, he became tired and lacked motivation, but he was eventually restored when Necrozma disappeared. He later prayed at the Ruins of Conflict while he waited for the Manalo Festival to begin. In Securing the Future!, Hala joined the rest of Alola in restoring Necrozma to its true form by lending it some of his Z-Power.

He reappeared in a flashback in No Stone Unturned!.

In Beauty is Only Crystal Deep!, Hala was working on a Z-Ring when Pheromosa arrived at his house. He and Hariyama attempted to battle it, but Pheromosa managed to steal his Fightinium Z before fleeing when the Ultra Guardians arrived on the scene.

In The Dealer of Destruction!, Hala, his fellow kahunas, and Lusamine helped Professor Kukui reveal the Alola League to the public.

In The Secret Princess!, Lillie visited Hala after she came across her father's Z-Ring, which he earned from the island kahuna himself years prior. She sought his permission to use the Z-Ring, and Hala accepted on one condition: that Lillie be able to perform a Z-Move with Snowy. Lillie took up the challenge, but the Z-Power failed to completely charge up. Even so, Hala was touched by Lillie's ambition to train hard and connect with her father. As a result, he allowed her to keep the Z-Ring temporarily.

In A Timeless Encounter!, Hala appeared in a flashback, where he defeated an Ace Trainer while being watched by a young Professor Kukui.

In Battle Royal 151!, Hala appeared alongside his fellow kahunas, acting as a referee during the Battle Royal round of the Manalo Conference. In Battling Besties!, Hala refereed the first pair of first-round matches: one between Ash and Faba, and the other between Guzma and Ilima—before watching Hau's match against Samson Oak.

In Imitation Is the Sincerest Form of Strategy!, Hala watched the battle between Hau and Ash. In the next episode, Nanu declared Hau the winner when Hau's Decidueye stood up after a clash with Ash's Rowlet. However, the verdict was overruled by Hala after he pointed out that Rowlet had fallen asleep instead of being knocked out. Hala later comforted Hau after the latter's loss to Ash. Afterwards, he refereed the battle between Kiawe and Sophocles. Then, from The Road to The Semifinals! to Enter the Champion!, he watched the rest of the battles in the stands for the remainder of the tournament. After the final battle ended, Hala attended the award ceremony for the winner, only for it to be interrupted when a Guzzlord arrived at the stadium through an Ultra Wormhole.

In Z-Move Showdown!, Hala and the other island kahunas joined forces to battle Guzzlord. The guardian deities later came to their assistance, using their powers to keep Guzzlord in place long enough for Hala and the others to fire off their Z-Moves. The combined attacks launched Guzzlord back into the wormhole it came out of, successfully sending it back into Ultra Space.

From Exhibition Unmasked! to From Z to Shining Z!, Hala refereed the exhibition match between Ash and Professor Kukui.

Hala appeared in a fantasy in Dreams of the Sun and Moon!.

In Thank You, Alola! The Journey Continues!, Hala acted as the referee of Hau's grand trial battle against Nanu and his Alolan Persian.

Personality[]

Hala is a carefree individual. He is also respected for his knowledge, experience, and adherence to Alola traditions. As such, many characters often seek out Hala for advice, like Lillie in The Secret Princess!. He holds his position of island kahuna with immense pride and uses it to instill patience within the younger generations.

Olivia (Japanese: ライチ Lychee) is a character introduced in Pokémon Sun and Moon. She is the kahuna of Akala Island and a member of the Alola Elite Four. She specializes in Rock-type Pokémon.

History[]

While not mentioned by name, in The Guardian's Challenge, it is revealed that Kiawe completed Olivia's grand trial and received a Z-Ring from her prior to the start of Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon.

She partially appeared in Young Kiawe Had a Farm! during a flashback, when Kiawe told Ash that the Z-Ring and Firium Z he had received from Olivia was his grandfather's. She was also mentioned in A Glaring Rivalry! when Gladion revealed that he obtained his Rockium Z from completing her grand trial.

Olivia physically debuted in The Island Whisperer!, where she traveled to Melemele Island and visited the Pokémon School, taking Ash and his classmates to visit Akala Island. She continued to appear during throughout Ash and his classmates' stay on the island, first in Treasure Hunt, Akala Style!, where she organized a class involving treasure hunting using Stoutland Search. During the treasure hunt, Lana found a Sparkling Stone, which Olivia took to be converted into a Z-Ring. The finished Z-Ring was returned to Lana in the next episode.

In Currying Favor and Flavor!, Olivia sent Sarah, Ash and his classmates on a search for ingredients for the famous "Akala Curry". Ash was paired up with Mallow, with their search eventually leading them to Lush Jungle, where Sarah's quest to find berries lead her to Eevee, Noctowl and Goomy (soon to be her Sylveon and Goodra) and she caught them all to get the berries needed before she and Ash were challenged by Totem Lurantis. After Ash and Sarah defeated Lurantis, Olivia showed up and revealed that the entire search had actually been a part of Ash and Sarah's trial, and they now qualified to take on her grand trial with Sarah going first

In Trials and Determinations!, she battled Sarah in his Akala Island grand trial at the Ruins of Life, using Lycanroc and Probopass in a Double Battle against Mudsdale and Wooloo. Despite their two opponents giving them a lot of trouble, Mudsdale and Wooloo finally managed to defeat Probopass, only for Luna's Rockruff brother acting out again and biting Luna horrifying himself before Sarah reassured the little Puppy Pokemon. After the battle, Olivia gave Sarah a Rockium Z and told him that Rockruff's behavior was a sign of it being ready to evolve soon.

In The Professors' New Adventure!, Olivia attended the wedding of Professor Kukui and Professor Burnet.

She reappeared in flashbacks in Some Kind of Laziness! and Not Caving Under Pressure!.

In Full Moon and Many Arms!, Olivia was seen praying at the Ruins of Life while she waited for the Manalo Festival to begin. In Securing the Future!, she joined the rest of Alola in restoring Necrozma to its true form by lending it some of her Z-Power.

In Heart of Fire! Heart of Stone!, Olivia met up with Ash and his classmates again when they visited Akala alongside Brock and Misty, who were visiting Alola. Brock became infatuated with her, resulting in Misty dragging him away. She agreed to a battle and used Lycanroc against Sudowoodo but the battle was interrupted by Team Rocket who attempted to steal the Pokémon. Brock and Olivia avoided capture and teamed up to attack Team Rocket with a heart shaped Continental Crush.

In The Dealer of Destruction!, Olivia, her fellow kahunas, and Lusamine helped Professor Kukui reveal the Alola League to the public.

In A Recipe for Success!, Olivia was visiting Aina's Kitchen when Abe asked Mallow to collect some ingredients from Oranguru. Mallow was gone for a while helping out at the Café, so Olivia started helping Abe at the Kitchen and was later joined by Ash and the rest of his classmates. Olivia later watched as Mallow returned with a Grassium Z given by Tapu Koko, and a Z-Ring given by Oranguru. She then cleaned and decorated the Z-Ring before giving it back to Mallow for her to use.

In Battle Royal 151!, Olivia appeared alongside her fellow kahunas, acting as a referee during the Battle Royal preliminary round of the Manalo Conference. In Battling Besties!, Olivia refereed the second pair of first-round matches: one between Hau and Samson Oak, and the other between Mallow and Lana. From Imitation Is the Sincerest Form of Strategy! to The Road to The Semifinals!, she continued observing the Manalo Conference battles. She then refereed the semifinals battle between Kiawe and Gladion in The Final Four! and Getting Down to The Ire!. Nanu (Japanese: クチナシ Kuchinashi) is a character introduced in Pokémon Sun and Moon. He is the kahuna of Ula'ula Island. He specializes in Dark-type Pokémon.

History[]

Nanu debuted in Puppy Pair Predicament where he appeared to Po Town when Sarah and her pokemon went to reduce the Puppy Pairs parents from Team Skull where he said he'd send her remains home if she didn't make it, which made Sarah gulp. He was surprised and impressed when Sarah came back with the Lycanroc Pair. It was only after Kukui told her that Sarah realized Nanu was the Island Kahuna of Ula'Ula Island, shocking her.

Nanu debuted in Why Not Give Me a Z-Ring Sometime?, where Team Rocket hoped to get a Z-Ring from him at the recommendation of Giovanni. However, he initially refused to give one to them, even claiming that the island kahuna was away at the time. Later, when Acerola had been kidnapped by a Gengar nicknamed Greedy Rapooh and Team Rocket helped save her, Nanu reconsidered and gave them a Z-Power Ring, which they used in conjunction with their Darkinium Z to activate Black Hole Eclipse and defeat Rapooh.

In Tough Guy Trials!, Nanu received a phone call from Giovanni, who was surprised to learn Nanu had become both a police officer and an island kahuna. He asked Nanu to tell him about the Pokémon the people of Alola call "the Blinding One", but the call was interrupted by the arrival of Ash, who came to challenge Nanu in a grand trial. Believing that Ash wasn't ready to challenge him, Nanu lied, claiming that he was a different person, and he had Ash play with his Alolan Meowth while he went somewhere else. Later, after realizing his kendama had gone missing, Nanu visited Acerola to retrieve it. Acerola forced Nanu to let Ash have a battle with him, which he begrudgingly accepted. During the battle, Ash's Lycanroc went berserk after its fur got dirty, allowing Nanu's Krookodile to swiftly defeat it. When Nanu told Ash that he should just return to Melemele Island, Ash refused and instead decided to remain on Ula'ula and train for a rematch.

In A Battle Hand-Off!, Nanu was revisited by the trio, who was looking for Ash. He sent them to the Thrifty Megamart, and later sent Ash there as well in a ploy to delay the grand trial. However, when Ash returned, Nanu was shocked to learn he defeated the trio, leaving him with no choice but to accept Ash's challenge for a grand trial.

In the next episode, Nanu battled Ash for his Ula'ula Island grand trial, but only allowed him to use one Pokémon against his three. Under these conditions, Ash chose to use Lycanroc. During the battle, Nanu noticed that Lycanroc's red-eyed state boosted its power while Ash continued to mistake the occurrence for another rage attack. Nanu attempted to use this to his advantage by taunting Ash and questioning his skills as a Trainer. Ash, however, saw through the distraction tactic and eventually managed to clear the grand trial, partially thanks to Tapu Bulu healing Lycanroc with a Sitrus Berry in between the second and third rounds. After being defeated, Nanu considered giving Ash a Darkinium Z, but quickly changed his mind and gave him a Lycanium Z instead.

In Full Moon and Many Arms!, Nanu and Acerola were seen praying at the Ruins of Abundance while they waited for the Manalo Festival to begin. In Securing the Future!, Nanu joined the rest of Alola in restoring Necrozma to its true form by lending it some of his Z-Power.

In The Dealer of Destruction!, Nanu, his fellow kahunas, and Lusamine helped Professor Kukui unveil the upcoming Alola League to the public. In Battle Royal 151!, Nanu appeared alongside his fellow kahunas, acting as a referee during the Battle Royal round of the Manalo Conference. In The Battlefield of Truth and Love!, Nanu refereed the third pair of first-round matches: one between Sophocles and Mina, and the other being between Jessie and James.

In Imitation Is the Sincerest Form of Strategy!, Nanu observed the battle between Gladion and James before refereeing the battle between Ash and Hau. In Battling on the Wing!, he continued to referee the battle. When Rowlet appeared to be defeated by Decidueye, he was about to declare Hau the winner when Hala pointed out that Rowlet was only sleeping. Hala then overruled Nanu's decision, allowing the battle to continue.

After observing the first semifinals battle in The Road to The Semifinals! and The Final Four!, Nanu refereed the second one between Ash and Guzma in Getting Down to The Ire! and The Wisdom Not to Run!. Then, in Final Rivals! and Enter the Champion!, he watched the finals battle between Ash and Gladion in the stands. After the final battle ended, Nanu attended the award ceremony for the winner, only for it to be interrupted when a Guzzlord arrived at the stadium through an Ultra Wormhole.

In Z-Move Showdown!, Nanu and the other island kahunas joined forces to battle Guzzlord. The guardian deities later came to their assistance, using their powers to keep Guzzlord in place long enough for Nanu and the others to fire off their Z-Moves. The combined attacks launched Guzzlord back into the wormhole it came out of, successfully sending it back into Ultra Space.

In Exhibition Unmasked!, Fiery Surprises!, and From Z to Shining Z!, Nanu watched the exhibition match between Ash and Professor Kukui.

Nanu appeared in a fantasy in Dreams of the Sun and Moon!.

In Thank You, Alola! The Journey Continues!, Nanu was seen having a grand trial battle against Hau, using his Persian against Hau's Decidueye.

Personality[]

Despite his island kahuna title, Nanu prefers to relax and distract himself with his kendama. He finds the responsibility exhausting, often complaining about it and lying in order to get himself out of any situation in which he must commit to his duties. However, when forced into battle, Nanu enjoys bringing out the passion in a challenger through anger. During their grand trial, Ash quickly learned that Nanu's underhanded tactics like berating comments were just part of his battle strategy.

He is also an old acquaintance of Giovanni, though the exact nature of their connection remains unclear. He is a good boss to the reformed Team Rocket trio as Meowth said, when he's not trying to slither out of his duties.

Krookodile
Krookodile is Nanu's first known Pokémon. It was first used during Nanu's first battle against Template:Ash and his Template:AP. During the battle, Nanu had Krookodile deliberately anger Lycanroc, who eventually went berserk after its fur was dirtied by Krookodile's Mud-Slap. Lycanroc proceeded to attack wildly until it was defeated by Krookodile's Crunch.

Krookodile reappeared in Guiding an Awakening!, where it was the first Pokémon Nanu used in his grand trial battle against Sarah, Dusk (Sarah's Lycanroc), Ash and Lycanroc, and sought to pull off a similar strategy to the first battle. However, this time, Ash's Lycanroc wasn't phased and was able to defeat the Intimidation Pokémon, delivering the finishing blow with a Rock Throw.

Hapu (Japanese: ハプウ Hapu'u) is the island kahuna of Poni Island. She specializes in Ground-type Pokémon.

History[]

Hapu debuted in That's Some Spicy Island Research!. She was first seen feeding a group of Sensu Style Oricorio some Poni radishes (大根 daikon) that she had farmed. Later, she encountered Ash and his classmates at her farm. Assuming Ash to be one of the radish thieves that had been stealing her crops lately, Hapu used her Golurk to battle his Pikachu and won. Later, she saw Ash confronting Team Skull Grunts Tupp, Rapp, and Zipp, the actual radish thieves. With her Mudsdale, Hapu easily defeated the grunts, but was interrupted when Plumeria arrived to take her subordinates with her. Afterwards, Hapu apologized to Ash for her earlier accusation but refused his request to battle her.

In Showdown on Poni Island!, after praying at the Ruins of Hope, Hapu watched as Mudsdale stepped on a Corsola branch, which became lodged in its hoof and caused it to go berserk. Ash and Pikachu were able to dislodge the branch with Iron Tail, which calmed Mudsdale down. As they walked, Ash revealed he wanted to challenge Tapu Fini to a battle for his grand trial. Offended by this, Hapu had Mudsdale kick Ash and send him flying. She continued to chase after Ash before being stopped by Lillie. Hapu later refereed the battle between Ash and Gladion. During the battle, she began to reconsider her low opinion of Ash upon learning that he had personally trained with Tapu Bulu to help his Lycanroc overcome its fear of dirt. She then watched as Tapu Fini flew over them.

In Evolving Research!, Hapu accompanied Ash, Kiawe, and Sophocles to Vast Poni Canyon during Sophocles's quest to evolve his Charjabug. There, she watched them battle several of the resident wild Pokémon. In Run, Heroes, Run!, Hapu helped taste-test some of Mallow's Poni radish-based dishes.

In Memories in the Mist!, Hapu had Ash and the others help out at her Poni radish farm. When a mist caused by Tapu Fini filled the area, Ash, Mallow, and Lillie went missing. Worried they would be trapped in the mist forever, Hapu traveled to the Ruins of Hope and confronted Tapu Fini in an attempt to stop it. The spirit of Sofu, her deceased grandfather, appeared, revealing that Tapu Fini has accepted Hapu as the next island kahuna of Poni Island. After meeting back with the others, Hapu revealed she was made the next kahuna and promised to have a grand trial with Ash after she properly received the kahuna title through a ritual.

In A Grand Debut!, Hapu performed the ritual with Tapu Fini and officially received the title of island kahuna. Later, she faced off against Ash in a grand trial but was defeated. As a reward for his victory, Hapu presented Ash a box of type-specific Z-Crystals and allowed him to choose from one of them as his prize. As gratitude for his hard work, Ash let Pikachu choose for him, and he picked the Steelium Z. Later, as Ash and his classmates headed back home to Melemele Island, Hapu gave them some Poni radish as a parting gift before saying her farewells.

In The Dealer of Destruction!, Hapu, her fellow kahunas, and Lusamine helped Professor Kukui reveal the Alola League to the public. In A High-Speed Awakening!, Hapu watched the Vikavolt race. Afterwards, Hapu gave Sophocles a Z-Ring as a reward for helping out the other contestants' Vikavolt when Team Rocket tried to capture them.

In Chasing Memories, Creating Dreams!, Hapu fought Gladion in the Poni Island grand trial and lost. In Battle Royal 151!, she appeared alongside her fellow kahunas, acting as a referee during the Battle Royal round of the Manalo Conference. In The Battlefield of Truth and Love!, Hapu refereed the fourth pair of first-round matches: one between Kiawe and Acerola, and the other between Gladion and Lillie. In Imitation Is the Sincerest Form of Strategy!, she refereed the second-round match between James and Gladion. Hapu observed the rest of the battles from the stands for the remainder of the tournament. After the final battle ended, Hapu attended the award ceremony for the winner, only for it to be interrupted when a Guzzlord arrived at the stadium through an Ultra Wormhole.

In Z-Move Showdown!, Hapu and the other island kahunas joined forces to battle Guzzlord. The guardian deities later came to their assistance, using their powers to keep Guzzlord in place long enough for Hapu and the others to fire off their Z-Moves. The combined attacks launched Guzzlord back into the wormhole it came out of, successfully sending it back into Ultra Space.

In Exhibition Unmasked!, Fiery Surprises!, and From Z to Shining Z!, Hapu watched the exhibition match between Ash and Professor Kukui.

Hapu appeared in a fantasy in Dreams of the Sun and Moon!.

Personality[]

Hapu is a particularly reserved individual. Since her grandfather's passing, she has grown accustomed to spending her days by herself. She is often seen harvesting Poni radishes to relive the days she spent with her grandfather. However, in That's Some Spicy Island Research!, after encountering Ash and his classmates, Hapu was initially defensive, though she began to open up to the students after learning they also deeply cared about Pokémon. In her following appearances, Hapu tended to accompany the group and even invited them into her home while they were completing their school projects on Poni Island. She tends to act stoic and denies being lonely, claiming she feels comfortable being alone even to her own Pokémon.

She holds herself in high regard and speaks in a rather sophisticated manner, using longer and old-fashioned sentences to express herself. She is also quick to judge others, such as when she assumed Ash was the one behind the theft of her radishes, despite having no evidence to support this. Upon being proven wrong, Hapu is also able to easily and quickly recognize her mistakes and apologize. At the end of A Grand Debut!, she even agreed to battle Ash again just for fun, something she wouldn't do before.

Being the granddaughter of a former island kahuna, Hapu possesses great, intimate knowledge behind the concept and true meaning of being a kahuna, while also showcasing vast knowledge about the myths surrounding Tapu Fini and its abilities. She is an impassioned battler who seeks to truly challenge any opponents to prove their worth. Her dedication to her island's history and traditions led Tapu Fini to recognize Hapu as being a worthy next island kahuna in A Grand Debut!.

Despite its strength, Mudsdale was eventually defeated when Suciune and Keldeo inflicted it with a Burn due to their double Scald attack and when Pikachu splashed water on it, simulating the effects of Soak, allowing it to defeat it with Gigavolt Havoc.

Known moves are Stomp, High Horsepower, Double Kick
