University & Society

Established in 1973, the University of Crete is a young public educational institution committed to excellence in research and teaching. The seat of the University is the Gallos Campus in Rethymnon, where the Schools of Philosophy, Education, Social, Economic & Political Sciences are located. The Voutes Campus in Heraklion is home to the School of Sciences & Technology and the School of Medicine, as well as a number of affiliated research-oriented infrastructures and facilities, including the University General Hospital.

The University accepted its first students in 1977-78. Currently, over 18,000 undergraduates and 3000 postgraduate students are registered here. They are educated by an outward-looking academic faculty of around 450 members, supported by adjunct lecturers, post-doctoral researchers, laboratory staff and instructors, as well as around 300 technical and administrative staff.

The international orientation of the University is reflected in its track record of collaborations with many of the leading research and educational institutions in Europe and worldwide, as well as active promotion of mobility and exchange programmes. Research and research training at all levels benefits also from the de facto regional cluster of research institutions i.e. the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH), the Institute of Marine Biology, Biotechnology & Aquaculture (IMBBC), the University General Hospital (PagNi) as well as the other HEIs in Crete. Reflecting its research activity and associated initiatives, the University of Crete is the first Greek University to have signed the EU Charter and the Code for the recruitment of researchers, and forms part of the Euraxess European network for the mobility of researchers. The University fully participates in quality assurance mechanisms both for its academic and administrative structures, and it is a strategic choice of the University that there will be an ongoing effort to meet quality in all its structures.

Located on the island of Crete, a site rich in ancient and modern Mediterranean cultures, the University offers a vibrant social and intellectual environment for research and education. As such, whether your contact with the University is brief or long-term, we trust it will be rewarding.

Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is a multidisciplinary process for patients recovering after an acute cardiac event or with chronic cardiovascular disease that reduces mortality and morbidity and improves quality of life. It is considered a cost-effective intervention and is expressly indicated in the guidelines of the major medical societies. Thw area of CR is stikk under develped and the career across Europe is expected to grow and produce lot of job opportunities across. Cardiologists with a special training in cardiac rehabilitation have a critical role in supervising these programs or coordinate a cardiac rehabilitation center. In addition, since the population of patients with cardiovascular disease is increasing rapidly and prone to adverse events during exercise, other medical specialists with a focus in rehabilitation will gain a big precedence with this Mc.

Cardiac rehabilitation specialists can work in a variety of settings, including hospitals and cardiac centers and can choose from several different career tracks. Apart from the medical part, career options in the cardiac rehabilitation field can include nutritional counseling, nursing and physical therapy. Registered nurses may meet with patients with heart disease to instruct them on what to do for recovery, such as getting rest, exercise, taking medications and adopting healthy lifestyle habits. Physical therapists can teach their patients exercises that can help them reduce pain and expand their range of motion and functional status after a cardiac event or guide the patient with chronic cardiovascular disease in the proper exercises to strengthen cardiovascular health. More importantly, this cardiac rehabilitation program will offer the graduates the expertise of prompt exercise counseling and advance their careers in new directions of UpToDate cardiovascular health and wellness.

The unique nature of the course will offer the opportunity to participate in research protocols and training projects that will make this learning experience far exceeding a traditional Master degree route. Finally, It will provide skills and knowledge for entrance into academia and research development, or leadership areas of the field

TIME is an accelerated, full-time Master’s program in Business Economics (MBE). It is jointly offered by a consortium of three universities: The University of Crete, the University of Cyprus and the Wageningen University in the Netherlands. It is recognized by the Greek, Cypriot and Dutch Education authorities within the framework of the Bologna Process.

The program consists of three components:

  1. The Academic Modules – 60 ECTS (September – May) The academic module is taught independently by the University of Crete and the University of Cyprus between September and April at their respective campuses. Both Universities follow an identical curriculum and time schedule.
  2. The Summer Practicum – 30 ECTS (May – July) Between May and July, students undertake a summer practicum that takes the form of either a Supervised Internship or an Entrepreneurship Summer School. The internship is overseen by the University of Wageningen and is expected to take place in the Netherlands, Greece or Cyprus. The Entrepreneurship Summer School takes place at the University of Crete for both cohorts.
  3. The Master Thesis – 30 ECTS (May – December) The master thesis is normally drafted between May and December the 31st. If more time is needed, students can extend the period of completion.

An integral part of TIME Program is the fact that it involves 1, 2 or 3 different allocations in 3 different countries: Greece, Cyprus and the Netherlands.

Students can choose to follow the courses either in Crete Campus (Rethymnon Crete, Greece) or in Cyprus Campus (Nicosia, Cyprus). Thus, applicants who wish to apply for the Crete campus follow a different link than the applicants who wish to apply for the Cyprus campus, in order to complete and submit the application form.

TIME gives students the possibility of switching campuses between modules. After the completion of the first module at the campus of their choice (where they have submitted their application), students can choose either to continue for the next module at the same campus or to change. It should be emphasized that the University of Crete and the University of Cyprus both follow an identical time schedule, curriculum, set of procedures, and rules and regulations

TIME comprises 16 different courses belonging to three modules:

Module A: Business Economics and Quantitative Methods

Module B: Innovation, Commercialization and Entrepreneurship for R&D Intensive Firms

Module C: Business Skills for Innovative Ventures

Nearly all courses are taught in 24 academic hours. Performance is assessed through exams, individual assignments and team projects.
